What Is A Goldendoodle

Goldendoodle’s are designer dogs, a hybrid dog breed resulting from breeding a Poodle with a Golden Retriever or other variations via dog breeds like the Australian Shepard, Cocker Spaniel, etc. The Goldendoodle breed is not a breed but a crossbreed.

Types of Goldendoodle

You may have noticed that there are many variations to a Golden Doodle. There are different percentages and different dog breeds involved. We will break this down for you below to help you in choosing your Golden Doodle and to help to know what to look for and ask of a Goldendoodle Breeder.

First we will break down just the differences in breeds involved which can result in many types of Goldendoodle in itself.

  • Aussiedoodle
    • This is a mix of Australian Sheperd and Poodle.
  • Australian Labradoodles
    • This is a Labrador Retriever, Poodle, Cocker Spaniel multi-generation
  • Bernerdoodles
    • Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle. Often called Bernese Doodle or Bernedoodle.
  • English Goldendoodles
    • English Golden Retriever and Poodle.
  • Goldendoodle
    • Of all the types of Goldendoodle this is the most known and is a mix of Golden Retriever and Poodle
  • Labradoodle
    • Labrador Retriever and Poodle (Learn about Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle)
  • North American Retrievers or Double Doodles
    • This is one of the unique types of Goldendoodle which is a mix of Golden Retriever and Poodle and then Labradoodle which is Labrador Retriever and Poodle. This is a two generation blend.
  • Petite Goldendoodles
    • Golden Retriever and Cavalier for the mother dog and then miniature Poodle for Sire. This is another two generation blend.
  • Teddy Bear Goldendoodles
    • English Golden Retriever which give the wider Teddy Bear face and Poodle.
  • Teddy Bear Schnoodles
    • The Schnauzer with wide Teddy Bear face and Poodle creates another of the unique types of Golden Doodle.

So you can see here there are quite a few options that can result in many different looks to the Doodle.

Goldendoodle Generation Number

F1 Goldendoodless and F1 Labradoodles

The first generation Goldendoodles and Labradoodles are identified with the letter and number F1. These are the product of a pure Retriever which is bred with a pure Poodle. The result of this is 50% poodle and 50% Golden Retriever or Labrador Retriever. F1 Doodles are the traditional Doodle that have many of the traits people think of when then think Golden Doodle. They are intelligence, have a loving demeanor and are also referred to as being hypoallergenic. Many still shed a little though so best for a home with only light allergies. You also will notice the coats on this generation of Doodles. They are shaggy and can be curly.

What is an F1B goldendoodle and F1B labradoodle?

An F1B Goldendoodle is a cross-breed of an F1 Goldendoodle with a Poodle. This generation is popular due to the non shedding trait that occurs 99% of the time. This generation is the most hypoallergenic Goldendoodle (<- please read our page about what hypoallergenic is and how its used with this dog breed) type of the different generations. So if you have severe allergies this would be the best fit for your home. You still get the same strength and good health and the favorable personality traits with the F1B Doodle. The coat type again will vary here and can be long and wavy or shorty and curly. You will also see more color variation in the F1B generations.

What is an F2 goldendoodle?

An F2 Goldendoodle is a second generation. This means the parents are both F1 Goldendoodles. The second generation Goldendoodles also have pretty similar qualities to the F1 Doodles. You will most likely get light shedding with the F2 generation Doodle. So they are best for homes with only light allergies.

What is an F2 Labradoodle

The F2 labradoodle is a second generation whose parents are both F1’s. It’s parents are a miniature or standard poodle and labrador hence labradoodle.

What is a F2B goldendoodle?

The F2B goldendoodle means there is a mix of generations also referred to as multigenerational doodles. It would be a F1 Goldendoodle and an F1B Goldendoodle. While less common they are still a great generation. You see the non shedding quality come back in this generation so good for homes with moderate allergies. You still get the good traits of personality and good health also.

What are goldendoodle traits?

Grooming will be a big requirement with Goldendoodles. Some more than others depending on the coat type. You should groom them about every 4 to 6 weeks and they should be brushed regularly.

The hair will be wavy to curly not so much straight but we do see it. You will have very little shedding if any at all. Most are very allergy friendly with the F1B being the most allergy friendly topdeblogs.comendoodles with their Golden Retriever and Poodle parents will be very sweet and affectionate dogs. They are highly intelligent and love to play but are gentle still. They make great family dogs.

They make great therapy dogs but can also be used as service or guide dogs, however activity is a restraining factor in this for a happy healthy dog. They are great with challenge and make good agility dogs. They need exercise and do best in homes with active family members where they can get plenty of outdoor-activity. They need daily exercise. A lack of exercise can result in some unwanted behavior like excessive digging, chewing, barking or other activities.

Due to the nature of the parents you will want to watch the chewing tendencies and make sure you train from the beginning not to chew, especially on people. Teaching them its ok on their toys is a great route.

Due to their nature they do not make good apartment dogs. They need outdoor activity and room to play. This would be the only push back of having them as therapy or guide dogs as they require a lot of activity by nature.
