Back in 70 A.D, the Romans took the Rottweilers from Weiler, Germany (now, Rottenberg), hence the name Rottweiler.

The Romans used the Rottweiler for herding cattle, and for protecting the cattle and other herd animals from wolves and other predators. Rottweilers were also used as meat cart pullers as well as personal protection detail.

Did you know that in the mid-1800s the Rottweiler nearly went extinct? Yes, the Rottie nearly went extinct due to the fact that trains were now a much cheaper way of transporting meat. If not for several lovers of the Rottweiler breed in the 1900’s, this breed would be extinct today, as indicated in this article on Rottweiler facts.

Since they are not a large dog breed their lifespan is considerably longer than some breeds like the:

  • Rottweiler
  • Great Dane

  • Boxer
  • Doberman Pinscher
  • German Shepherd

Training needs of the Rottweiler Golden Retriever mix

The Rottweiler Golden Retriever mix will learn really fast! Why? Because both parents are extremely smart in nature, training starts whenever you get home with your puppy. Whenever you have free time, train, train, train your puppy. The more training the better your Rottweiler Golden Retriever mix will be!

The puppy’s mind is like a sponge, the more commands you put into that brain. When training never give up on a command, keep repeating the command. Until the puppy does what you are asking him/her to do.

If you are struggling you can take your puppy, to puppy classes where you will get really in-depth training.

Socialization needs of the Rottweiler Golden Retriever mix

Rottweiler Golden Retrievers mix temperament is mellow except for when you say “wanna go for walk? or wanna play?” then they are like a rocket on crack.

Even though the Rottweiler Golden Retriever mix is a mellow dog it is always good to get them accustomed to other people, dogs, objects, and noises. The trick is to socialize them while they are still puppies when they are unafraid of anything.

When socializing them you can take your puppy to Petco or Petsmart and enroll for some puppy classes. This allows them to be trained by a trainer and allows them to play and work with other puppies their own size. One of the most important things to never do is taking them to the dog park.

Taking an unvaccinated puppy to the dog park is like taking a time turner. To the time of the great plague that was raging across the medieval world.

How long do you think you would last without that vaccination shot? Well, I can answer that question, and the answer is not very long.

The temperament of the Rottweiler Golden Retriever mix.

The Rottweiler Golden Retriever temperament is one that is:

  • Calm
  • Loving
  • Loyal
  • Obedient
  • Caring
  • Playful
  • Friendly

Other than being watchful over you and the house the Rottweiler Golden Retriever is awesome with people of all ages.

All you have to do is make sure that you have put the right amount of training from when he/she is a puppy to a full-grown adult. You can never go wrong with too much training.

Exercise needs of the Rottweiler Golden Retriever mix

The Rottweiler Golden Retriever Mix exercise needs are high, they need at least two very long walks per day, and or one to two long runs per day. Retrievers also love the water so keep that in mind, the Rottweiler Golden Retriever mix is also pretty smart.

So while exercise and play are great you also need to hone in that mind of theirs. Otherwise, they will find a way to amuse themselves so whether that means herding, search and rescue, obstacle course, or just learning new tricks is a great way of keeping him or her out of trouble.

Health and grooming for the Rottweiler Golden Retriever Mix

  • Bloat – Bloating happens when he has eaten and is then exercised this can make the stomach turn over and twist which can be very deadly if not immediately caught and fixed.
  • Cataracts – A natural thing that happens with age
  • Arthritis – Some Rotties can get arthritis at an early age
  • Bone cancer – Sadly the Rottie has one of the highest rates of bone cancer.
  • Cancer – The Golden Retriever also has a severe risk of cancer
  • Skin Problems – The Golden Retriever health issue of rashes and other irritants may come up with the Golden Retriever Rottie mix
  • VWD – A blood-clotting disease
  • Chest problems

Rottweiler Golden Retriever Mix needs lots of brushing because of its mid-long hair. So instead of brushing them once every week.

I’d would say you should brush them twice a week and even then that’s not when its autumn or spring. So they would need to be brushed every day during those months. During the changing of summer to winter coats or vice versa you will differently need the vacuum during those times.

Their nails need to be trimmed every so often so that they don’t split and crack leading to a deadly infection. Make sure to clean the ears whenever you wash your dog. His teeth are also very important so brushing them should be every two weeks.

A Golden Rottie named Colby by a Labrottie contributor: Lori Stephenson

I have had a golden retriever rottie for 11 years, he is the best dog I have ever had in my life. Sadly yesterday Colby was diagnosed with congestive heart failure from a grain-free diet.

I am broken-hearted. I’m trying to find another golden rottie and have looked endlessly. I know they’re out there but where? Please let me know if you can help.

Thank you. Lori Stephenson Atlanta Georgia

I have had many different labs and goldens and beagles. But I have to say Colby is the most lovable, loyal, kind, fun-loving, kids and family-friendly dog I have ever owned.

Colby’s great:

  • car rider
  • boat rider
  • swimmer
  • smart
  • adventurous
  • loves toys knows them by name
  • sticks frisbees
  • unwraps everyone’s Christmas presents on command.

Colby has such a personality as though your speaking to another human. He gets his leash when he has to go out. Colby was potty trained and housebroken at 7 weeks!

We’ve never seen such a smart breed combination of love and guard dog. Yes, I am sure a lot have their own personalities.

But what I’ve read about people that have, is that they have the same characteristics and share the same personality trait. They do shed a lot and require a lot of brushing and vacuuming.

As far as weight him being a male, Colby comes in at 95 pounds. Colby loves his walks! But doesn’t like being separated from his family. Colby has never ever torn anything up in my house.

His only fault was when my Mom came to live with us last year and passed away. He kept sneaking in her room out of 5 bedrooms and chose hers to lay in. With his head on the pillow and covers down.

Thank you for your suggestions. AKC doesn’t consider him a breed recognized so it’s hard to find that mix but we won’t give up hope on him or another one!

Thank you. Lori Stephenson!
