The GoPro Hero 9 Black has a bigger 1,720mAh battery than its predecessors. The company claims that it delivers up to 30 percent better battery life compared to the GoPro Hero 8 Black. When we tested the Hero 9 and Hero 8 side-by-side while recording 4K video, we noticed that the GoPro Hero 9 battery life actually lasted 23 minutes longer than Hero 8!
In this article we discuss all about the specs and details of the GoPro Hero 9 battery life. I’ll also give you some tips on how to improve it, in addition to a couple of battery pack replacements that I recommend.
GoPro Hero 9 Battery Life: Specs
The GoPro Hero 9 features a 1720 mAh Lithium-ion battery. When it’s in the Hero 9, the camera works for around 2 hours and 11 minutes on a full charge (when recording in 4K). So, you’ll have to pack an extra battery if you’re planning a full day of shooting. Like the previous GoPro cameras, you can easily charge the battery while its inside your camera – the simplest way to charge it.
However, you won’t be able to use the old Hero 5, 6, 7, & 8 external battery charger with the Hero 9 batteries. Also, if you’re upgrading from an older Hero model, your spare batteries won’t work with the Hero 9, since it has a newer (bigger) battery.
GoPro Hero 9 Battery Replacements
Now that you know quite a bit about the official GoPro battery that the Hero 9 Black camera comes with, let’s discuss about some good third-party alternatives. These alternatives are very useful as your Hero 9 battery replacement or as a spare battery for longer duration recording.
Here are the two great GoPro Hero 9 Battery Replacements that I recommend:
#1. TELESIN 2-Pack Replacement Batteries for Hero 9
This TELESIN 2-Pack Replacement Batteries and Charger Kit is fully compatible the GoPro Hero 9 Black camera. With 1750 mAh capacity, it offers same working time as the original GoPro Hero 9 battery.
With this battery pack, you also get a Compact Quick Charger that can charge 3 batteries simultaneously. It can fully charge 3 batteries only in two hours. The package includes a USB port too, made of high-quality ABS material.
#2. REYTRIC Hero 9 Replacement Batteries 3-Pack
Another great battery pack for Hero 9, the REYTRIC Replacement Batteries 3-Pack is fully compatible with the GoPro Hero 9 Black, and features same design and dimensions as the original GoPro battery. The three 1720 mAh batteries help in tripling your camera running time!
The package includes a 3-channel charger with a closed lid design. So, you can charge as well as store the extra batteries in it. This charger is capable of fully charging the three batteries simultaneously in about 3 hours.
9 Tips to Extend Your GoPro Hero 9 Battery Life
Did you have better expectations by the new GoPro Hero 9 battery life? If the extra 23 minutes that you get with Hero 9 (compared to Hero 8 batteries) are still not enough for you, then try implement these nine simple tips to significantly extend your GoPro Hero 9 battery life:
#1. Keep Your GoPro Off When Not Recording
This one is a no-brainer actually! You should keep your Hero 9 off when you’re not recording. This will help in increasing its running time.
#2. Keep Your Batteries Warm in Cold Weather
Lithium-ion batteries don’t well in cold weather. So, consider putting your GoPro battery in an inside zippered pocket of your jacket when the camera is not in use.
#3. Turn Off the LCD Screen
Keeping your Hero 9’s LCD screen on uses more power. So, if you’re looking to save your GoPro’s battery life, you’re better off sticking to the old-fashioned way of not using the LCD screen while using the camera.
#4. Keep Protune Off
Keeping Protune off when recording with your Hero 9 will slightly improve battery life. However, you’ll have to compromise on image quality if you do this.
#5. Use a Wall Charger
Instead of USB cable from your PC, you should charge your GoPro battery using a wall-charger. It will help you get a faster and better charge.
#6. Update the Firmware
Updating the firmware of your Hero 9 camera will not only fix lingering issues, but it can also increase the battery life, thanks to any small fixes the company might have implemented to improve its battery performance.
#7. Don’t use the Extra Settings (WiFi, GPS, Voice Control)
Turning off the extra settings like WiFi, GPS, voice control etc. can boost the battery life of Hero 9. However, please note that you won’t get a drastic difference in running time. This step will just add an extra 10-15 minutes.
#8. Reduce the Recording Resolution or Frame Rate
The fewer pixels and frames your GoPro has to record, the lesser energy it will use. So, reduce the recording resolution or frame rate of Hero 9 to boost the recording time.
#9. Bring along Extra Batteries
If you bring along fully charged extra batteries with you, you can easily double or triple (depending upon the number of batteries you have) the running time of your GoPro Hero 9 camera.
To significantly increase your GoPro Hero 9 battery life, following the above-mentioned tips will really prove to be helpful. If you can’t follow some of these tips because you think that you won’t be able to use the camera to its full potential, getting an extra pack of batteries is a great option. Buy one of the above-mentioned battery packs for GoPro Hero 9, and you’ll be able to significantly increase your camera’s running time.
